I have this very nice watercolor done by an L. Hartland that I could find nothing about. I was able to find Albert Hartland so my thought is the 2 might be related. There are a few other pieces that have sold by L. Hartland but no information about the artist. Hoping one of you might know about this artist. Thanks in advance!

Hard to see. What do you think the setting is?

Could be a talented amateur. Your piece is superior to these.

Thank you Tahmoor girl and Debora. The person who sold it to me had it marked "Ships in Harbor" but I am pretty certain the artist is English or Irish. I was hoping Albert might have used a different signature on occasion!

Davenports has the artist listed as 19th century Britain, painter of ships. Listed as signed on your painting. 1 auction result from 1988 for a watercolor.

Albert's Niece was also an artist so maybe his son also painted watercolors.
Or perhaps his father painted watercolors and you've found an older one.

I'm not sure how to find out the name of his father.

An amateur doesn't paint for a living, a professional painter does. Both can be talented. In general there is more talent among professionals than among amateurs, otherwise they couldn't make a living from their art.;) But some amateurs are very talented.
