Daughter’s husband dug up this rock in their backyard today. He thought it was jade, but I said, no, probably green quartz, and via google that’s what they think it is. So, confirming it is green quartz? And where we live there’s lots of white and a fair amount of pink quartz, but I think this is the first piece of green quartz I’ve seen. Is it a rarer colour? 1F66EB7F-1867-49D7-B22E-1EC8C9D43E39.jpeg

I'd be guessing Fluorite rather than quartz.

I shall give that a look. Now that I think of it, it does look rather like some fluorite.

I love rocks! That does look like something in the fluorite family...I bought a smilar one at a rock shop in Utah, at Zion National Park, but it was green and white.

It reminds me of the pretty green stones that turn up in the gravel around here (VA). I wondered what ours might be so I check our Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy (who knew). I'm guessing ours might be green calcite.

I don't know that yours is calcite but was just thinking you may have a similar agency that might have rocks that are local to you.

LOL — another site suggested green calcite, so I’m asking my daughter to try a hardness test.

Tourmaline is another possibility. I'd take it to the next local "Gems & Minerals" show to confirm if you need to.

Don’t think tourmaline, although that would be nice. I’m leaning towards calcite now.

Ooops. My rock is calcite, I know because I bought it at a rock shop, but quartz does come in green and it is difficult to tell between the two. Are you near Parksville? They have an active rock hound club. https://pdrockandgem.org/field-trip-april-2017
