Hi John. Unfortunately there was nothing on the base.

Showing the base is usually still helpful, even if not marked.

I know zip about these, but it does seem to have lovely quality.

Agree, folks like to see the base for construction, etc.

Those appear to be ruyi attached to the neck. Are they cast metal?

No, they seem to be of the same material as the vase itself.

To be totally honest I can’t tell you when this one was made. All I can say is that it’s a very attractive piece and finely decorated. The Qing dynasty ran through to 1912 so it doesn’t have to be ancient to be Qing. I imagine that the price difference between a vase of say 1850 and another of 1980 would be significant so get expert advice if you are buying or selling.

I'm wondering about the condition of the base. Potential there for artificial aging.

Still a very nice looking vase.

Agree, the base looks to be trying too hard. Also the first line of the text may be trying to say something about age or period, which is never a good sign. That said there is some shading in the flowers and the tunic, and the treatment of the faces is decent. So I'm wondering if it's a Republican piece (which is still good news). It really needs to be in the hands of an experienced Chinese porcelain appraiser at a decent auction house for a proper review.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

It is a pretty vase, no matter what.
