Hi, all! I just picked up a great little antique carved bone chess set similar to one in a closed auction sale. I'm wondering if anyone is familiar with these and if they can tell me how old it might be. Can I post a link here to illustrate? Don't want to break any rules! :)

    Thanks!

If you don't have pictures of your own set, posting a link is not forbidden. But if the ended one is only "similar" to the one you bought, comments about that one may not be very useful without yours to compare to.

Link away, but be aware of the pitfalls.

I doubt if the linked set is anything but cast resin. That does not mean yours is. But the original use of bone or ivory for chess pieces predates the general use of the Staunton pattern.

The OP has not pictured their set. I have my soubts about the ebay set, but I am pretty sure it is not all that old.

No they haven't ...you're right..., but you mentioned ' the linked set' , which I see as bone.

As for age..I linked to a wood set that was almost identical to the one I grew up with, so I'd peg ' that one ' at at least 50 years old.

The bone set and the OP's may not be as old as that .....I'm not sure about the age of either of those.

The introduction of Jaques 'Staunton' set in the mid 19th C pretty well set chess design in stone for 150 years. I associate bone or ivory sets with either the Barlycorn design or a more Indian design.
