Trying to find out who the carver of what I think is a soapstone carving mounted on
what seems to be a plastic plinth. He or she has marked both with the initials "R.G." so they seem to be relatively satisfied with their work. It's 14.5cm high(total),12cm wide and 0.9kg. Any ideas?????
    Cheers

I don't think this is carved or a one off, I'm afraid. It's a representation of an Egyptian stele with some ancient bloke's name on it. I suspect decent tourist piece or museum replica.

Your right it is quite well done. As it came from an estate sale Mr. R.G. was probably the deceased inscriber. I'm thinking the discoloration of the initials probably means it's from the sixties or seventies but I might be dreaming again.

That discolouration can be a deliberate effect.

Could be but it is kind of odd to put initials on the carving as well as the plinth. I think that's what made me think it could have been the carvers signature. You would have to be pretty paranoid about theft to put you signature all over a piece of common cheap tourist ware. Wouldn't you? Maybe not.

The bird is Horus the falcon wearing the double crown (pschent) of upper and lower Egypt. The "Eye of Horus" - "Egyptian symbol of protection and royal power from deities." At the moment not sure who or what the hieroglyphs are representing on this stele reproduction. I think a pharaoh was considered as Horus when living and as Osiris when dead??? Then again probably doesn't represent specifically anyone or a minor person in the Egyptian hierarchy. The hieroglyphs read from right to left to something like Ankhmes-tw, Ankhmes-tou, ... ???

"3 Fox skins" = born of = Mes or Ms
"Sandal strap" = life = Ankh

"Quail chick" = W or OU
    "Loaf of bread" = 1/2 circle = T

Thanks for that Susan. I tried to translate it but couldn't find a small bird symbol with the bird looking right. They all seem to look left at this website http://www.omniglot.com/writing/egyptian.htm

I think the RG was the original carver of the tourist piece if that makes sense and that it was then mass copied. I have reconstituted Italian marble bits of the same nature.

One think that has got my interest is the blank area underneath the hieroglyphs.
Room for "here lies my loving husband Fred Ankhmes" ???

Markings such as this were not always related to theft/recovery. In a twenty five room house that was occupied by the same family for over 300 years, many of us marked items so that they still "belonged" to us when the time came, and not to the estate.

If that makes any sense..............the triggers all seem to be misfiring this morning.....................
