Hi all. Just picked up this charming portrait and you know I must have liked it,I paid $25 ! not one for portraits usually but this chap just appealed to me. Plus I think hes very well done. Hes 22x28 ,oil on board ,and was painted in 1959. Ive searched the artist signature until I went blind, but nada. I found the young mans obituary ,he died at 86 and was very beloved . Any input is always appreciated.

I think it's charming too. He's a handsome young man. Mostly likely a local portrait painter.

Nice picture johnny. Agree that 'charming' is the word for it. Nice clean-cut-looking kid.

Not really big on portraits but I like the boat and background.

He grew in Jersey City. Do you think that's meant to be Manhattan in the background?

It's nicely done. Very interesting with the sailboat in the background.

Maybe there wasn't any left. It could also have come down through the artist's family and no one knew who he was. Sometimes an artist painted something like this for an art class and it was a neighbor's kid.

I think it's a great portrait. The young man looks very poised.

That's a tough sig. Perhaps could be short for a surname like Vaccariello or some such?

    I'd think a woman artist's initials.

Really nice Johnny-has a kind of naive (or 'folk') sophistication. Reminds me a little bit of Peter Hurd, might remember him as the guy who did LBJ's portrait in '67.

Love the keen look in his eyes, all the hope for the future youngsters should have at that age.
I can imagine, he looks like a friendly and bright young man.
