Art Nouveau? Belt Buckle...looking for info

Discussion in 'Jewelry' started by Scared of cats, Jul 23, 2018.

  1. Hi, I bought this several years back with the intent of turning it into some type of jewelry. Never going to happen. Anyone have any idea of what era it might be? I am thinking Art Nouveau? I figured I would just post it on Ebay? Don't know if it is really worth much?
Any insight appreciated. It is really beautiful, but alas, is sits in a drawer.
    Thanks!

Looks like that says printemps, so French? And I'm thinking hair grip/clip.

I would say Victorian, not Art Nouveau. It has plant forms and a woman, but not the Art Nouveau stylized versions of either, too realistic.

    It is gorgeous.
It does, printemps, spring. French language, that could also be parts of Belgium and Switzerland. Belgium is a great Art Nouveau country, just like France.

In Continental Europe Art Nouveau is known as having a gradual development from life-like floral swirls and sprays to stylized floral swirls and sprays.
But if you're not comfortable with the term, you can use the French/European terms 'belle époque' or 'fin de siècle'. Both refer to that same period, but don't have the stricter definition the term Art Nouveau often has outside Continental Europe.
The girl's hairstyle is also very much of the 1890s.

For those of us with arthritic or otherwise afflicted necks, lovely Printemps in all her glory:

My neck thanks you for rotating it, AJ.

It is a cool piece, I think someone would want it on Ebay.

Janet - does that medallion look a bit familiar?

    (And thanks again!)
