Any ideas on the orgin and age of this? I've gone through all my reference books, but found nothing.

Size is nice to know also. Fill it with water then pour water into a measure. If it holds 1/5 gallon then it is likely to have been made for one or another brands of fire-water.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

You can see the bottle is glued onto the wood!!

Its a lovely vase,I wonder what in the hell someone was thinking with that wood. I think its possibly Japanese , 1870s give or take.

Don't think that wood is going original to the vase. I'm thinking 20th c. on the vase, not 19th, but just guessing here.

    Looks like Satsuma.
Since you have two threads on the same item, I'll answer the other one as well:confused:.

Satsuma is earhenware, this appears to be porcelain. Japanese very likely.

You're right about Satsuma, but it's hard to tell the material. By the way, because of the international popularity of Satsuma, others started producing Satsuma-like wares as well, some of it porcelain.

Well I'm new to Asian antiques, so that is why I am asking for help. I can't show the bottom as it is glued to a base. What kind of price range for an item such as this?

I managed to remove the base, and there are zero marks.

Bases are not just about marks. In a lot of cases they give some clue about age and other hints.

Could I get a price range for it? Just a rough range.

Can you post a picture of the bottom of the vase?

If you are looking to invest, it is best to buy something that is not fixed to a wooden base. If the base can be removed, ask for it to be done before buying, so you can judge the condition and make of the entire piece before you buy it.

I think 60 bucks was a good deal. Now the base is gone and it's cleaned up, it'll make twice that.
