    Hi,
I got this bowl in an auction box lot. I know nothing about pottery so I was hoping I could get some help with the age and origin. It is 8 1/4 inches by 2 3/4 inches. No markings that I could find. Thank you for looking! DSC03853.JPG DSC03854.JPG DSC03854.JPG DSC03857.JPG DSC03855.JPG

Imari would be of Japanese origin?

This site is deep & wide...filled with otherwise hard to find specifics about most things Asian & porcelain, including marks an' their dates.
Expect to spend some time...but your answers are probably available here:

That is a strange bowl! Can’t say I have seen one quite like that. I’d think quite modern. Not more than 50 years old or so probably. More likely within 30 years my guess. Technique looks traditional enough but the colors, and style, and way the beasts are done all looks off and newer. I almost thought it was Clobbered for a second but I think just newer and odd now. Good looking enough. Made for western export I think. I do like the center medallion the rest of it I could probably leave. I’d not toss it if I got it in a box lot though.

I get a bit older vibe from it... early to mid 20th perhaps. I'm no expert though.

Very nice colorful Imari. Not seeing any real age in it myself, but age isn’t always what one should be looking for. I lean to JDagger’s points, and add the top rim lip isn’t a feature I have notice in antiques, so there’s that. Could possible push it to mid 20th but that would be a hard push. The good news is, it isn’t trying to be a knock-off or reproduction by applying a fake reign mark, it is decent quality. It should display well and or sell as well, just be honest with potential buyers. There are plenty of them these days that seek vintage over antiques. Nice find.

I take the other posters' points, so I dunno, but I think there's more quality here than may first meet the eye. There is a fair amount of hand-painting and it's carefully done. Those gold-rimmed cartouches usually suggest early 20th c to me. But I always feel on shaky ground when it comes to Asian wares.

Thank you for all of your help! I am always confused by Asian pottery and porcelain. From what I found online, I would have guessed about 100 yrs old, but I can't find one that really matches this one. I will try the gotheborg site. Wish me luck!!
