I'm wondering if this tray is bakelite? Weighs 1 pound 10 ounces. Couldn't find any makers mark. Any information is much appreciated! I couldn't find one to compare unfortunately.

Have you done the hot water or simichrome test?

My first instinct would be lucite since it looks molded. That said, it needs testing.

Houseful no what is simichrome? Also do I run hot water under it and see if it has a odor?

    Thank you pearlsnblume!

    Evely never thought of lucite!

I’m in U.K. so no Simichrome Polish here but you can use a damp cotton bud dipped in baking soda, rub that on the piece and if it’s bakelite you will get a yellowish residue come off on the bud. The hot water makes bakelite give off a distinct formaldehyde smell, like a science lab. I wore some bakelite beads on a very hot day and kept getting a whiff from it:(

Are you that certain that it's not glass? Some modern glass has a slightly greasy feel to it.

Lucite or glass would be my guess from the photo. I'd be surprised if Bakelite. Too shiny and even the item itself, I'd be surprised to see that made in Bakelite. If you did the hot water test and didn't get any smell, that's another piece of info.

If glass it will be colder to the touch and would make a light "clink" if LIGHTLY tapped on a window. Plastic/Lucite warmer and more of a thud if tapped.

It is a nice looking piece.

No odor from hot water test. I guess glass or lucite it is. When I tap on the side it sounds like plastic but when I tap on the bottom it has a duller sound.

    Love it!

From pics looks like glass, but I would say lucite or acrylic if not glass.

I'd say glass. Early 70s and fabulous.

If you can't get simichrome, Maas works.

I think you can order simichrome on ebay. I did years ago.

I just use good old baking soda. It sometimes even works on red bakelite.
