Featured Bali carved bird with fish has Museum inscription?

Hi all,
I found this beautifully carved duck? or bird about to eat a fish it had caught.
Inscribed on the bottom it says

Tilem's Design
and
Njana Tilem
Gallery
Mas-Bali

The Museum says it's a collection dedicated to 2 artists -
Art Museum dedicated for the work of Ida Bagus Njana and Ida Bagus Tilem, as well as Ida Bagus Tilem's private collections

Mine says Tilem Design & the Museum name - so is mine a newer piece - maybe sold by museum as a souvenir to raise funds?
Or could mine have been done by Bagus Tilem?
What type of wood is this?
The carving work is incredible!

 

PS , it measures 11" wide x 5" high, so it's a nice size

 

It is not a museum but an art gallery that exhibits their own collection as well as sells works by several artists. There are many such galleries in Bali.

Your carving is by Ida Bagus Njana Tilem, the son of Ida Bagus Njana. He is also known as Ida Bagus Tilem.
(Njana is the old spelling, Nyana the new, so you can find both ways for the same person.)

I've come to like art from. When I bought storage units at auction- i could never take a i.age jn my mind & make it realistically (my attempts look like a 3rd trader's stuck figures!)

 

Don't let anyone tell you different--art is a skill and you can absolutely learn it! I think it's harder to start or stick with it as adults because we are more keenly aware of our faults while we're learning. But getting all the "bad art" out is part of the process! Any skill you want to learn takes time and the knowledge that it's going to be rudimentary before you get good.

If anything, you can say learning to make art makes you more knowledgeable in buying it, which is true. It's also a fun and (sometimes!) relaxing hobby. There were many older adults in the local state school's art classes who just wanted to learn to draw, paint, and make interesting things like baskets or fiber arts. You could always see what's on offer near you.

 

Yes, I do, it is good quality. And it is 'bagus', beautiful. Yes, bagus is part of his name, the name 'Ida Bagus' means he is a member of the Brahman (priestly/scholarly) caste.

He has made the subject his own, which is what artists do. He has also used part of the wood as found, a nice touch. So it is not your run of the mill tourist stuff.

 

Very nice! I feel sorry for the fish that may be about to be eaten. But that's the real world of nature.

 

Ha, The fish although a bit petrified, will be petrified before he ever gets eaten.
