Bamboo (?) desk

Hello antiques community!

I found a desk the other day and was wondering if anyone could tell me when it was made. I'd also like to know if it's real bamboo or not. It's in pretty bad condition, but I rather like it.

It is made from rattan, and looks like a vanity table to me. I like rattan furniture, I used to have a lot of it. Most of it is made in Indonesia, but it is also made in the Phillipines and Malaysia.
This could be 1960s, but they are still making similar furniture.

Considering its condition (the panel pins are so rusted, they are crumbling), it has to be a few decades old.

 

I agree. It was probably outside on a porch or in a damp shed too.
But very nice, you could keep the rattan from further wear by putting some wax or oil on it. Oil is better for the woven parts, wax can get stuck in there. You could also consider clear lacquer (transparent).

It's covered in clear lacquer or varnish that is coming off in places, especially the woven bits. I've been wondering if it's possible to get that stuff off somehow and then stain it.

Any thoughts/advice?

 

Sorry, I don't know. Rattan is a liana, not regular wood. Maybe @gregsglass knows?
