Bask in the beauty of this bulbous basketry! :) Now that I got my alliteration out of the way - this basket is about 10" deep, about 12" across width wise at the opening. I'd say it would hold...a peck? Has one flat side that I assume is how it is supposed to be set down? but with the flat side down, the opening is vertical, so I'm a bit confused at what this would be used for. Also the handle isn't really a handle...well...just take a look:

No glue or nails or staples - the only joinery I see is where the large curved reed attaches to the handle - there seem to be some shims in there to keep it tight(which it is).

    Thanks again for looking!

    Hummmmmmmmm.......let me opine !
it looks like half a buttocks basket, or called a melon basket..
I've not seen this style before , so, non traditional.

    but not unheard of either.
The wood handle is firm enuf to grasp while placing eggs or produce inside....or with the extended wood, may have been long enuf for a rope or sash to go around both ends , and hang flat on the body from the neck or shoulder freeing up both hands for collection....

They were also made as wall hangers.....still with handles...but the roughness of the two wooden ends on yours....looks like this may have served that purpose as well..

    upload_2019-6-4_2-25-25.jpeg

Did yours come out of Virginia ?

    upload_2019-6-4_2-29-29.jpeg

just a thought that yours may have had a handle , now missing, that attached to the wood lengths at both ends.....

Great pics as usual Aaron !!!!
Thanks for helping us...to help you !! Heehehe!!!!!!!

Yes ...bought at a second hand shop in Virginia - I thought it looked similar to a buttocks basket...but not exactly shaped like half. And yeah the large handle is firm enough to hang onto and carry. I want to help you, to help me!

Edit...some of your examples do look pretty close!
