Featured Basket w/ Quills

I'm not sure if this is 'tribal,' but this is probably still the best forum.

It's bundled grass and finished with two 'stripes' of porcupine quills.

Approx 7" tall and 7" wide (18cm)

Any leads as to origins?

Found at a vintage show in Portland, OR.

The basic shape and materials look African, and, although it is hard to see their size, the quills may be from one of the African species. They are larger than North American porcupine quills, and they are striped -

I have not seen it in traditional use, but it might be a newer novelty style made for sale.

There are quite a variety of sizes available from African species. But it will be difficult to compare when only parts (and no ends) are visible on the basket.

Well, who knew you could purchase porcupine quills on Amazon. Not me!

Feels a little bad.

I know a good porcupine joke, but alas it's too profane for polite company.

 

I once bought a tub full on Ebay..... to fix some Mi'kmah art work....
they still sit in the cupboard..
