Featured Bavent Majolica, Fruit object. Wot is it?

    Hello all

    I have bought this 'Bavent' majolica object.

    I think it's supposed to be a very large pear, but I can't work out what its purpose is. It has a slot on the back, like a money box but with no way to get anything out.

    Impressed mark underneath PM BAVENT.

    Height is 17cm

    I've seen banks that you have to smash to get the money out, but you wouldn't expect this to be one of them, would you? I think it's a green pear.

    Googling Bavent, there is a place of that name in Normandy, France and potterybis made there. I think it's a money bank and you would break open the pear to retrieve the money -- long tradition of that in Europe.

    Yes, whereas in the USA they break into banks to retrieve the money!
