Could be a sewing box with compartments for thread, needles, buttons, tape measure etc. It's beautiful ... very nice indeed, Joy.

    Very nice.
Crailsheim is a town in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
The man could be Charlemagne. Charlemagne was a king who became emperor in 800 AD. He is sometimes seen as the first modern European, because a large part of Europe came under his rule. He is called 'Pater Europae', father of Europe.

clearly carved given each panel is unique- unless of course each panel is pressed from different versions of the mold.

    Wonderful observation -
Crailsheim was occupied in 1945 - most of the inner city destroyed - but serval statues of Charlemagne survived. Other images of Charlemagne have a similar distinctive crown.

Further searching yielded a few 8 pointed wood boxes but none with Charlemagne or for that matter, perhaps none had carved busts

Thank You for this wonder clue

    Mo
