    Hi all,

I recently bought this vesta case from Lewes in East Sussex in the U.K. which by the way is a great place for antiquing if you find yourself in the south of England. The vesta is beautifully carved in wood on both sides but I have no idea of how old it is or where it originates from so I thought I would ask the worldly and wise on this forum. Any thoughts gratefully received. 52C8BBDA-EE85-476E-850C-03A8663D8B0A.jpeg F109040C-2228-4BE2-98A8-323F9F524A64.jpeg DC565719-B9BD-466A-9B6A-82025DD04752.jpeg

My parents used to have a box like this, I have no idea where it disappeared to.:(

This photo combines two traditional Norwegian crafts, rosemaling (floral painting), and scroll woodcarving:

Wow. :) Thanks Any Jewelry. Norway wasn’t even on my radar! Any idea of what kind of period this would be? Hope the box is just mislaid somewhere and you find it again.

I can't say for sure, it is an ongoing tradition. I have never seen antique ones that were lacquered like this, so I would guess 20th century, but that covers 100 yrs, so not very defined.:sorry:
Are you sure it is a vesta case? Is it the right size?

It’s got nice patina so I was thinking early 20th century. It’s roughly 6 cm x 4 cms by 1.5 cm deep so it’s definitely kind of vesta sized (though you can’t really tell from the photos -sorry) and is probably too small for a card case.

I agree, it is vesta size. Early 20th sounds good to me.
Amazing carving on such a small surface, isn't it. It is a little treasure.
