Anyone know what this would have been used for? The most common that I've seen have been for pen and ink or tobacco. Not sure on this one. Also, can anyone read the writing....maybe a signature? Carving is about 8" tall and 6" wide. Thanks!!! IMG_20191226_204210.jpg IMG_20191226_204335.jpg

If I were to venture a guess as to what it is. I would say a match and candleholder. Matches in the square box and candle in the other part. Doesn't make sense it being wood though.

I kept looking at this over and over thinking this doesn't look like wood. Until you said that I hadn't looked very close.
The OP says wooden, but it looks more like soapstone. I don't see wood grain. I see shiny, polished areas.

    A charming piece, Donnellm.
I agree, not Black Forest, I also agree it doesn't look like wood.
@Donnellm does it feel cold to the touch?

It is wood. Fairly light in weight and not cold to the touch at all.

Best place to see the wood grain is the broken ear tuft. :(
