    Hello,

Thats a nice and unique piece. It looks Mexican by the incised colored in pattern. I have seen a lot of smaller Mexican clay pieces with that kind of decoration and smooth polished surface. I hope that helps.

I also think that it could be Mexican or Southwestern. The face is not very traditional and indeed it is a good candidate for Scream character :)

Kardinal -- truly you could furnish a "weird" house all by yourself. That thing gives me the creepy-crawlies! It looks as if it could sit on the mantel... And beseech the heavens...

I'd even take that gravy pitcher of Bev's over your moon-faced critter!

    :)

Found two with the same kind of faces.
I think your lady is probably missing a corn grinding apparatus.

The area around Tzintzuntzan in the Mexican state of Michoacán is famed for it's distinctive pottery. The burnished clay figures below are handmade by a small group of artisans on the shores of lake Patzcuaro who specialise in "barro negro", similar to that found in the state of Oaxaca. Height of Archer approx. 40cm. £43.95 (approx. $64.38)

These black clay figures (same face, style) are by Manuel Felguerez (b. 1928, in Zacatecas, Mexico), a well-known Mexican abstract artist and sculptor.
