    Hello

This pot is a little worse for wear to say the least, but I can't find any information on it. What does the makers mark say please? I can see it says CWS.

    Thank you.

The phrase below looks like Latin. Can you make out the first 5 or 6 letters, where the crack runs through?

Actually, can you transcribe as much of it as you can make out?

It appears to read something like..

AD DE LT BASC AUDAS LT M'LLE ESCARIA

IM Translator thinks it is Catalan but does not translate it to English. I am using ET (and) where you have LT. Guessing it is To God and Basque ____ and a thousand (whatever escaria are). Will fuss some more.

Putting in just 'audas et mille escaria' the translator reads it as Latin, with this translation:
    bold and a thousand baits

Somehow, I suspect that's not right.

That listing also says the maker is GWS&S.

Yes, but at least we know what the letters stand for now.

If you scroll back in that article there is apparently a long history of that firm (200 years is quoted early on) and they do manufacture things. The beginning talks about baskets.

So apparently it is GW Scott & Son's motto based on Bronwen's reference link.

    IM Translator's latest attempt:

add also bascaudas and a thousand fodder

Possible what was translated as 'fodder' really refers to the osier used in basket making. But 'bascaudas', of course: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/bascauda

What in the world does Morgan mean by an ancient Briton with curricle & spear? Before looking up curricle, I expected it to be a shield of basket work, not what I found. Could he have meant 'coracle'? Wiki to the rescue again: Other historical English spellings include corougle, corracle, curricle and coricle.

So OP's vessel was probably made in Belgium, expressly for Scott's. Doesn't appear to have been quite as indestructible as Morgan would have us believe.

Now, what about CWS? The letter W is not really used in Romance languages, but perhaps in Flemish?

" The ceramic pots and picnic boxes are stamped as shown CWS&S ADDE ET BASC AUDAS ET MILLE ESCARIA. I have had this translated by a Classics scholar and it means: 'add both baskets (of food) and thousands of things to eat' "

@Bronwen "This ware is of extreme beauty and lightness, resembling fine porcelain in appearance, and may yet be thrown about without suffering injury." - yes it seems somebody put this statement to the test and it didn't end well!

@Bakersgma got this part already. See above. GWS&S or G W Scott and Sons. Their trademark is Adde Et Bascaudas Et Mille Escaria with the knight and sword.

On the curricle/coracle, really looks like CWS to me:
