Book with odd notation on copyright page?

I recently acquired this copy of Virginia's Eastern Shore: a Pictorial History by Curtis Badger.

On the title page verso, beneath the copyright information is this addition:
"This is a special edition and not for sale in bookstores or other retail outlets."

Why would that be there? There is no price marked anywhere on the dust jacket.

    TIA,

    Lynnie

    A via-mail book club edition?

A correction: there is a price of $18.95 on the bottom back flap of the dust jacket. I apologize for the error.

    Private printing?
    Maybe financed by the author.

    Hmm, that's a thought.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

That seems possible. From what I can tell, he has written lots of books and is also still around. Or he was 2 years ago:

His books I've seen listed online were all published after 1983. So this may possibly be his first book... or one of his first, anyway. Now he is well known, but maybe not as much back then?

    Maybe an uncorrected proof.

Would they have bothered with a dust jacket?

    Asking, because I don't know.

    Good point, probably not.

I just searched Donning Company Publishers and they specialize in special editions, still in business.
