Featured BookPageant -- new site for collectors

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

In an email discussion group for booksellers, librarians, and book collectors, I just learned of this new website called BookPageant. https://bookpageant.net/

The site is meant for collectors who wish to post information about items in their collections -- sort of a catalog of your collection. It starts out with books, but the subtitle of the site says it can be used for collections of maps and ephemera as well. So far there are two book collections there. I've looked at it just briefly, and it looks especially good for historical collections, as there is a timeline for each.

There are also two videos linked from the main page introducing the site and describing how to upload data. The site is free to use. As the creator (David DiLaura) wrote in the discussion group, cloud storage is so inexpensive that there is no need for him to charge for it.

Even if you don't want to participate in the site, you might like to view the collections of others.

Not sure how it works yet. On my phone it is a bit of a mess. I’ll have a look later on my laptop.

I am just a simple collector. This looks for the really fancy ones. If they are interested in my collection, it is also possible to post them anonymous?

That's what I thought. People with very deep pockets.

Top collections. No doubt the owners love them and have done their research, but it really is for rich people, which few of us are.

When you click on the square with the book information, a lot more detail comes up. Looks like this site doesn't have a mobile version.

Thanks for noticing that. I hadn't tried the videos and they don't work for me, either. I just informed the creator of the site about that.

Yes, you can post anonymously. This is what he said about that in his original message to the list:

"Though the two collections currently on the site display the collector’s name, a collector can remain anonymous – after all, the point is the collection, not the collector. Activity and use will eventually suggest corrections, additions, and changes, and BookPageant will be updated."

A staff member in the library where I used to work for a while was trying to collect one book for every year since the beginning of printing. Due to the costs of older ones, he was not able to be selective about condition, but had amassed quite a few. Then he sold all of the more valuable ones and started over again later. This was on a staff member's salary, which is not all that much. (However, he was also a very lucky person and won a good sum of money twice in the lottery.)

A great way to collect books! For every year a book. 1455 will be a tough year though, even if you have the money. The last book from that year was sold in 1978. Maybe a single page would be an option.

    P.S. I love the $3.00 shipping costs!
