More mystery bows and arrows. One bow is bamboo and all of the arrow shafts also appear to be bamboo. African? , maybe for fishing?? Arrows 1.jpg

I'm surprised they used bamboo - it gets brittle when it dries out especially when that thin - it had to be coated with some kind of resin to make it stronger.

maybe so.....but it''s easy to find young reasonably straight growth.....
it's lighter than wood..... and used in a humid climate ....
    path of least resistance ...

Given the use of bamboo, could they be from the Philippines or Indonesia (except for the black ones)?

I've collected bows and arrows forever, even brought some home by airplane, as "carry-ons" (before there were rules against it), from Australia to U.S. Based on my collection, I'd say the ones with carved wood tips (especially the ones 6th and 8th from the left, in the second photo) are from New Guinea or the Solomon Islands. Here's a Bonhams Skinner website: https://www.bonhams.com/auction/295...d-solomon-islands-arrows-lg-from-47-to-70-in/

Arrows from that area are distinctive, and I've never seen older arrows from there, made with metal tips.

The others are probably African, or newer ones from Asia. As to the use of bamboo, it is a fairly common material, used wherever it is grown.

Forgot to mention (internet comes and goes) that my collection from PNG all have decorated shafts. while those from the Solomon Islands, don't. I have no idea if that is common or not, and have been unable to confirm it.
