From my research I believe this may be a chamber stick. It is 15 1/4" long & is 5 1/4" across. Obviously it has some condition issues & I am not sure anyone will want it, but I figured what the heck. :p

Would this originally have had a shade of any kind? If it is what I think it is, how old do you think it might be?

Of course it is not marked anywhere I could find. :(

Given the long handle, maybe it's for checking for monsters under the bed?

Is that a slide? What effect does it have?

That is a foot. It is the same as the 2 on the rounded part. Maybe it was to raise it up off the table surface so as not to leave marks if the candle go too low & the metal got too hot.

This footed long handle chamberstick would not have had a shade. I haven't been able to date it because of the feet. Many of these were around in the 18th century. Many were made by the English, Dutch, French and also in American. No doubt some were made in Germany. Reproductions were and may still be sold at Colonial Williamsburg and Old Sturbridge Village. The Brass Book, American, English and European Fifteen Century through 1850, pp. 205-206, has pictured several long handled chambersticks dating from the early 1700s to the late 1700s. It seems by 1800 the long handle was out of style. Most have a pierced handle allowing them to be hung up when not in use. Most importantly none of them are footed like yours. As yours is footed I doubt it dates pre late 1800s and possibly a reproduction dating from the mid 20th century?

This one is footed and claims to be Victorian:
