Brass chapati bread box India, any idea of substance inside?

Brass chapati bread box. Thinking vintage, decorative on the exterior, but what do you think is going on inside? Sort of looks like blue paint, it is dried in any case. It chips off and you can see brass underneath. One thing I didn't try doing was soaking it. Any thoughts?

    Thanks.

So a blob of polish that wasn't cleaned, or actually a stain from polish?

Either way, any thoughts on how to get rid of this?

    Hi,
I would give it a good scrubbing with brass polish. Even if it too shiny it will turn darker again after some time.

I'd actually soak it in hot water then spend some happy time picking away at it with a fingernail.

Looks more like flaking paint in the photo, bubbles on the right side of the rim?

It is thick in spots, not uniformly thick. It does chip off with my fingernail, brass underneath. A bit paint-like, but does chip off. Just not sure it is worth working on. I'll put a little effort in, if not it gets donated.

I think if it's paint soaking in hot water will help make it easier to flake off. JMHO :)

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Late to this thread, so will just say that when I read the subject line saying it's a bread box with a "substance" inside I was expecting some kind of petrified bread!

Oh, and how did the cleanup go, @Lucille.b ?

At first I wondered if it was some kind of food substance, too. Kind of "batter" like at first glance.

Well, clean-up was a bust. I soaked in water on the off chance that would help, did not loosen it at all.

I think it is vintage, and has a nice decorative look, but also has a small dent on the side which impacts value. This substance, whatever it is, does chip off, but it would take hours.

It was just $1, so all things considered, it is in the donation pile. Someone may like it as is, just for display or maybe someone who likes cleaning.

    Thanks!
