I have little doubt that if it isn't plated spelter, it is bronze. Brass, a copper/zinc alloy, doesn't reproduce the fine details that bronze, a copper/tin alloy, does.

scoutshouse, did you notice the painting labeled 'A mural commemorating the first ovariotomy performed in Columbia, with a fully anesthetized patient. Artist: Eduardo Ramirez Villamizar (1922-2004)' ?

Ovaries are not in the rib cage area, and the patient appears to be a man, LOL!

So, it's the fineness of the details! Thankyou! I think it's solid metal, it's heavy for the size, and it does have nice detail. As far as I can tell, there are no seams on the bottom that indicate it could be filled with cement or sand or some such thing for weight.

Spring: aren't spelter pieces usually hollow? :)

Did you check to see if a magnet attracts it? It is so dark in places I'm wondering if it could be plated cast iron.

Re yr ?, I'm thinking spelter pieces could go either way, just like bronze, but I'm no ex-spurt.
