This cast brass wall sconce was screwed to a small Peranakan altar. I felt it had no business being there, so I unscrewed it.
It is a single candle sconce with traces of gilding, mainly on the arm.
The back plate has a flower basket motif, the arm has leaves or scales.
The parts unscrew and there is a hex nut in the back.

The altar dates from the late 1940s, when many Peranakan (Straits Chinese) were forced to leave Indonesia and ended up in the Netherlands. They couldn't take anything with them, so one family created a new family altar with what they could find.
Did they find a 1940s sconce or an older one?

    Thank you for looking.:)

Thank you.:) We are a few hours drive from France, so it could be French.

The roses make me think it was new when they used it, or close enough.

Thanks. Yes, the roses look 20th century. They remind me of ca 1910 German rose jewellery, which has nothing to do with the sconce of course.;)

Maybe @the blacksmith can give some insight, AJ. I think the stamped hex nut with that uniform appearance would negate too much age on the piece, personally.

It's a great looking sconce. Shame there aren't two of them.

My thinking is probably even later than the 1940's, probably 1970's I am afraid. I have helped a friend with a scrap business, and he has had several similar types of castings and fittings. sadly, all gone to scrap!

I did consider that, was also wondering if it was a replacement, but I guess we'll never know.
Agree, and thank you for your input.:)

That is OK, I consider it a freebie because I only wanted the altar.;) Any insight is welcome, because this is something I know nothing about.
Yes, sadly, because I noticed these sell. Not a fortune, but good enough for me to put it up for sale.:D
Thank you for you help, I appreciate it.:)
