I think that's a George Jones mark so maybe Briard? is the pattern name.

Sorry, part two of your question about cleaning. I'd first soak it in warm soapy water for quite some time and see if that brings it to acceptable. You can also set in the sun on sunny days for some types of staining it partly depends on the type of dirt.

If you have staining especially if it's penetrated the glaze many will use an extended soaking (possibly days long) in peroxide bleach. Don't use chlorine bleach but the type of strong peroxide used by hairdressers in the 20-40% range. Follow with an extended soaking (again think in days) in clean water.

Strong peroxide bleach, available at beauty salon suppliers, is a great cleaner. My first attempt on tough dirt though has always been a good overnight soaking in warm water with a few (depending on object size) denture cleaner tablets. That most often saves the hunt for the peroxide.

 

I'd put it in the dishwasher.

Dishwasher, AF, isn't always good for glass, pottery or porcelain. Too hot! Can break or cause glazing. I found that out the hard way.

 

I've seen them called toothbrush boxes and toilet boxes (probably to avoid having to commit).

Now THAT's a modern re-purposing. Personal massager holder it is!

(opinion based on my scholarly readings, of course...)

 

I experimented with oxi-clean in water for soaking stains out. It much less expensive than the peroxide bath. If the stains are not very dark, it works great. Very dark stains faded but didn't disappear. Sometimes, the darker stains vanished with a second soaking in a fresh batch of oxy-clean.

I also experimented with the creme bleach from Sally's Beauty Supply on left over darker stains. I put the creme bleach on a dampened paper towel and placed it over the stained area. I kept checking ever hour until the stain was gone.

After all the stains have vanished, I soaked the pieces in plain water for several hours.

Being a bit curious, I decided to check the ingredients on the box of Polident tablets I've had for X number of years and just used with expected good results about two months ago.

Now I wonder how old these are. NO LIST OF INGREDIENTS. Except for the "contains baking soda." And, "contains Minty Mouthwash ingredient."
