Looks like somebody soldiered the top bit recently.

Definitely not English language at the top, but can't figure what it is. The figures look Viking? A Scandinavian language?

Cyrillic script.:) There were Vikings in Russia and Ukraine, but maybe this is a later Medieval scene?

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I didn't think I'd be able to read this at first, but it may commemorate Russians crossing the Danube River in 1828 during the Russo-Turkish war that began that year. I can't make out the first word to the left of the flag, but got all the others: ход через дунаи (modernized in what I copied here, as some of the words on the medallion are written in older style). That translates as "crossing the Danube." The question I have relates to their clothing, which appears to be from an older period than 1828. I can't explain that, unless there was an anniversary that year of an earlier event?

Are there some very tiny words above the year? I can't make out what that is.

Those links give a lot of information. Wish I could see the whole set in person.
