Stephen, would you be kind enough to post a photograph of the back as well please? Lots of information about your brooch will be revealed there.

Yes, thank you. I'm taking the liberty of reposting as a Full Image so it's easier for everyone to see.

Thought that was a classical head but... Appears to be neo-classical. Monogram "CL" at right? Wonder if it's not Josephine Bonaparte who has been painted similarly attired.

Yep. Can't find that exact profile -- this one's by David -- but suspect a copy of or inspired by a period medallion.

wow . Yes I can see that it is exactly depicting Josephine Bonaparte. Probably some sort of medallion/intaglio mounted as a brooch. Truly lovely/ I must say. Thanks so much. x

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Didn't know if the LC or CL (or that could be a G) held some meaning in @Stephen Lang's brooch.........

This one by Bertrand Andieu is a bit closer:

    Josephine Bonaparte Andrieu.jpg

We need an engraver whose initial are CL/LC (I favor CL.)

There's a Claude Lessot with no further info. I already searched Forrer's Biographical Dictionary of Medallists with no luck.

Scrolling up & down was making me nuts.

To my eye the 2 monograms look slightly different, but could just be angles/lighting.

In his entry in Forrer's Biographical Dictionary of Medallists..., the number of the portraits Marie Alexandre Lucien Coudray did is so many they are not itemized along with other works with more mythological & allegorical themes. Coudray lived a century after Josephine but may well have executed a medal from an image in another medium.

But he did do a medal of Bach held in V& A
Medal, Johann Sebastian Bach, bronze, by Marie Alexandre Lucien Coudray, French, late 19th century to early 20th century

Signature monograms very similar but... just doesn't look like an example of his work.
