I recently picked up this wooden bowl, made from what appears to be a burl from a black ash tree. It doesn’t appear to have been turned on a lathe, and it looks very old. I’m just wondering if the group thinks this could have been made by Native Americans? It surfaced in northeastern New York State.

Sure looks old. Could be 'primitive' hand-made too: settler, 18th C farm etc.

Can you tell how that crack was formed? Just the wood pulling away from itself over time?

Thanks. Yes, it’s a natural crack from the wood shrinking over time. You can see how the crack follows the grain in the wood at that spot.

Thanks! Could be either. To my eye, it looks like the bowl was created by charring and scraping down into the burl, rather than by turning on a lathe, which is why I suspect it may be NA.

The grain looks more root than burl

Where’d you find it? Story, not geographic location as you’ve shared that already. The area found is probably a tick on the good sign list if it’s wanting to be NA.

Great find David! Stunning bowl and of great age.:woot::woot:
That one is ceramic and Mississippian.;) The Mississippi cultures were very different from the cultures in New York State.
    Agree.

Just that they had acquired the bowl at an estate sale. Apparently it was the estate of a couple of long-time collectors of American primitives. Sounds like the kind of sale I dream about! Unfortunately, as the collectors had both passed, the seller wasn’t able to get any further info.
