    Hi there,
    IMG_0713.jpg IMG_0714.jpg IMG_0715.jpg IMG_0714 (1).jpg

Can someone help me identify this piece. Please see photos attached.

At the back it has a mark and on it, it says " Silver" . Does it actually mean it is made of sterling silver?

    Thank you very much,

    Iouri

Not necessarily. You'll need to have it tested to know.

I have a bowl that’s relatively similar looking. Not shell shaped but otherwise similar deign. Also lathe spun it appears. Mine is also marked just “silver” but without your additional marks. Mine has something that looks similar to a “v” and nothing else for marks. When I finally get around to testing it I’ll try to remember to update here. I bought it at auction in a lot of of other silver pieces. I trust the auction wouldn’t have included if it wasn’t actually silver but you never know! Good luck on your piece.

I found a large repousse bowl a few weeks ago that had the same ‘silver’ word mark. Turned out to be silver, I acid tested it and an Auction house approved it as silver too, said it was probably Indian.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Update this discussion if you do have it tested, Louri. It might help future viewers of this thread.

It might have had a glass insert that would hold the butter pats above crushed ice in the bottom half.

It is a beautiful dish, Iouri.
When an item is marked 'silver' it isn't marked 'sterling'. There are many very good silver items in the world that are a different silver fineness than sterling.:)
