Had no idea where to post this question, but know that some of the furniture experts here are pretty good with wood.

Any idea what kind of wood this is? It was at my local thrift. Was originally set to be a wall display as you can see from the hook and wire, but the bottom is totally even so could be set on a table, etc. Not exactly sure what I am going to do with it, but thought I'd start with the type of wood. Would it be redwood?

    Thanks!

I do think redwood or something closely related. The lighter part was the live outside edge of the tree when it was cut. Here is a live edge redwood table for comparison.

I can't say that I know. I remember some craft slab clocks that were said to be cypress, some redwood. I also am not sure but think your's might be a "crotch" piece from where a limb joined the trunk but I'm not a woodworker so don't give that much weight.

Anyway, here is a site that has examples of wood that I thought might be helpful. If you look to the left side tabs you can view lots of different types.

Perhaps a cypress knee sliced vertically rather than the more typical horizontal cut?

Thanks for taking a look everyone!

Just occurs to me I have a neighbor about 7 houses down that works with wood. I might show it to him too as he could inspect it in the hand.

I could suggest as a starting point, cyprus or redwood and see if he is familiar with those woods.

    Very helpful! Many thanks. :):):)

I first thought Maple but seems I'm off on that.
I know it's darker than normal Maple but that could be as to where it was cut and age maybe.
