Looking for any info on this large old engraving “Battle of Gettysburg.” I’m sure it is old, paper has browned somewhat but I’ve heard that is restorable in hands of a paper restorer. Frame is “older.” Guessing it is about 36x24”. I did spend at least an hour googling to find any engravings of this scene and failed. Well maybe it is, and I hate to use the grossly-overused term, “Rare!.” I may get it as i like the subject, how could I not like in image with artillery in it? Apologies for the s——y photo. Viewable part of image contains no publisher info, only names of Gettysburg landmarks visible, under their locations, including Little Round Top.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

What are the other words printed below the image? I see Battle of Gettysburg. Is the word partly hidden by the frame "Copyright"? And I see small words to the right, just under the image. Any clues could help somebody.

All the words I could see were local geographic names, for ex the small print just to right of bold title is “Little Round Top.” I’ll visit it again in couple of hrs and look at back etc. The print may have been colored but if so the colors have mostly faded away or are hidden by the brown.

Ms. Spring found this page containing that image. The sellers’s description is inaccurate however. I think the longer description on down page on right is more accurate. This image is apparently one of the scenes in the “Cyclorama” at Gettysburg. If this was sold to visitors, there must be a bunch out there.

The painting has probably been reproduced in engravings and other types of prints many times. Thanks for posting, as I didn't know about the cyclorama and just read some about it. It's fun to learn things here.

I realize it has glass over it, but see what you can do about reducing the window glare, huh????

No worries, the thing had sold by the time I got there today. I wasn’t looking forward to having to restore it anyway.

Wanted to make sure I didn’t pass up a small fortune so I called a friend who is one of the foremost Civil War collectibles dealers in the US. He knew the item well; said they are fairly common, a mint one sells for $400-450., and one in the condition of the one I saw goes for $200-250. So the estate sale buyer got a pretty good deal but not a steal. I had no interest in going to the trouble and expense to have it restored.

. He’s incredibly busy all year, dozens of long trips to sell at shows, appraising, picking up collections, etc., has no time for forums. But I know many such people and I call them when needed.
