I love the birds! They look very fragile. Anyway, someone will be along who can be of more help. Good work on photo, however they might like to see more. Like back, bottom, and such.:)

Welcome, Ohiobornandbred! I see you have other pictures in the Gallery. You should add them to this thread. :)

    Very nice.
1860-80s. Looks like walnut burl, but wait for @verybrad to id the wood.

Appears that it was re upholstered in the 1940s.

Oh now you are asking the wrong person. I've never been good with fabric.
I doubt it is chenille as it looks stiff and coarse. Isn't chenille usually a long soft cotton.

I'm finding similar listed as Velvet Brocade. And the fabric design may indeed be earlier than the 1940s.

Don't we have a fabric maven on the boards?

Sorry about that! I was thinking the 3-dimensional look to it might be similar enough to chenille bedspreads, but you're certainly right about the soft versus coarse. Having sat on some chairs with this kind of fabric, my memory of the feel of those was not exactly comfy. (Not casting aspersions on this one, mind you.)

Yes it was hard and scratchy.
    My first thoughts were wool.
I wonder if they made a wool brocade. Off to look.

    @Bakersgma
Apparently velvet can be made from many types of materials including wool
"Velvet made entirely from silk is rare and usually has market prices of several hundred US dollars per yard. Cotton is also used to make velvet, though this often results in a less luxurious fabric. Velvet can also be made from fibers such as linen, mohair, and wool."

I'm not sure. Looks like that one has velvet for the background as well as for the raised.

The above looks like only the raised.

I'm going to stick with Velvet Brocade and a good chance it's wool. Wool was used a lot for upholstery and rugs because of its durability.

Think clutteredcloset is right on with the dating and wood. Might add that the style is Renaissance Revival, though with those cranes, moving into Aestheticism.

I'd call it devore moquette. Agree it's 1940s upholstery especially with that trim.

I'm sure I've seen those bird heads before on another thread posted on this forum years ago.

Wow what a memory, and great searching.
I don't remember seeing those. Details on the front of the arms appear to be the same.
