I recently acquired a ladies fob watch with this face ! (see link above) So, it's a girl in a bowler hat, with what looks like a riding crop staring at a bee :) All very surreal. The watch dates from around 1890 - 1905 and was made in Switzerland but obviously for the English market. Any help in identifying her would be much appreciated or any ideas ........thanks.

Yes ! Thankyou very much !

So, it's definitely a Thelwell. The watch however is hallmarked with a swiss grouse so dates it between 1880 and 1907 i'm led to believe. It's key wound and set with a swiss 5 bar movement so I think I've got the watch age correct. Looking at the face through a loop, it does look as though the character was added at a later date and the face then lacquered. This explains the discolouration .

I'm running through the watch now and should have it working soon. I could remove the character and lacquer easily as it's an enamel dial but I think i'll keep it just as it is !

    Again, thanks for your help.

If you post photos of the watch itself someone might be able to verify your thoughts. Unfortunately I know more about fat ponies than clocks:)

When it's done I'll certainly put some pictures on this thread. I'll have it done by Sunday probably ! It's not like there's much else to do at the moment.

    Cheers

Absolutely she's Thelwell. I've been to Olympia for the horse show. It's hilarious how like his girls are to the small ones who ride Shetlands. Or Sh!tlands as my horsy friend describes them.

The first pony my daughters had was a dappled, fuzzy, 10 hand pony that I'm sure is exactly what they were talking about. Cleaned up and body clipped, we hauled them off to shows all the time. Rainbow (what else would little girls name their pony?) became known as the doughnut pony as after the show she'd arrive at the refreshment stand, reach her chin up and rest it on the counter and wait for us to buy her a doughnut:). img20210416_131833.jpg

Classic! The little girls all have two plaits with ribbons, too.

Oh gosh, how am I so late to this thread!
    Love Thelwell!
Interesting to wonder if Thelwell got his inspiration from something earlier if @broker2304 has his dates right....I can remember a midwife asking me that question.....anyway I digress.....

If you have a good kid's pony treasure it! We lost our darling Rainbow to a tumor when she was just eight though they tried valiantly to save her. She was the perfect little kid's pony and I was counting on having her for years. My youngest was just a baby when we lost Rainbow (25 years ago) and it hurts my heart still. We had other ponies that we loved but not like her:(.

Some ponies like your Rainbow and my Fleur will definitely find their place in heaven.
    Some will not........:vamp:

the grouse started in 1882, changed its form of frame in 1934, and was used till 1995.
