I bought this chair a few years ago from my neighbor that was moving out. She was an older retired lady that likes antiques. I paid $200 canadian for it. So like $142 American. Not sure of the age or where it comes from. It seems old though.

I believe it is made of Black Mahogany and is also in great shape.

    That's pretty!
You should probably post a few more pictures, like showing the underside, and a straight on view so the pros can clearly see the front and the legs, etc. They will appreciate that, I'm sure and it will help you identify it easier.

It may be stained black (ebonised) ...however there is no such wood as "black mahogany" and I very much doubt it would be made from any variety of mahogany.

all I can think of when I see a round hole in the seat is Potty Chair! Why would you have a hole in the middle of what should be a plank seat? I know NADA about furniture, just wondering aloud.

For me, your picture is very dark and hard to see.
It almost looks like the grain has been painted on.

Also the stretcher up front is rather strange placement.

I'm not so sure it is old. 1980s?

Not old. Yep, that was my opinion as well. Thinking 1970-2000s.

I tried to lighten it a bit to try to make out some detail. Macassar ebony?

Would that make it a... smoking chair, then?

Fairly typical Boston Rocker Rocking Chair, compare here:
    https://www.google.com/search?q=bos...XNnuAKHYxODnAQ_AUoAnoECAwQBA&biw=1013&bih=814

The wicker insert may have been put there after the original user had the seat converted with a hole for a potty.

If we think about who usually lounged in rocking chairs in yesteryears it was older people. Some may not have been able to reach a toilet when need. Toilets in the bad ol' days were often outside, i e outhouses. An older person with difficulties moving would never have made it outside in time so had a convenient potty installed where he or she sat most of the time.

A bit splishy-splashy (UGH!) for a potty don't you think?

I never heard of a rocking chair commode. Seriously doubt this was one of those.

    Form follows function etc.

It does have the general form of a Boston rocker, but I wouldn't call it "typical".

@blooey It depends what you mean by splishy-splashy. If an older patriach/matriach in a wealthy house became impaired there was perhaps a need to convert an already existing, beloved even, quality rocking chair to accommodate his/her needs. Dear Bloo, just because you've never heard of something doesn't mean it didn't exist, agree? Kovel's has:
