I have a possibly porcelain head, approximately 2 and a half inches long, 1 and 3/4 inches wide. it is a head, with a very large nose, full lips and ears that stick out. it does have a hole at the top so that it can be strung up and hung. has holes for the eyes and also an odd shaped hole at the bottom. The back is marked "Lurie".

Is there a hole at the base of the neck?
Kind of looks like a whistle.

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
I did find a porcelain artist named Joan Lurie, but her work looks nothing like your piece.
Yeah, as CC said... can ya whistle with it?
Otherwise... what? A weird pendant? Fob/pull for a light or fan or such?

Gee, this guy looks familiar. Not porcelain, but definitely ceramic. For some reason I'm thinking he had a fabric body. 70's? 80's?

Could it have been used in cooking for something that would produce steam?

Ocarinas from the look of it. They're the harmonicas of Central America.

I wouldn't know. I used to know a guy who made and sold them for a living. His company made heavy duty plastic ones, tougher than the ceramic traditional models and not horribly expensive.

i have been going thru the images of the ocarina's trying to see if i can find one similar to this one. My father has had this one for over 40 years, and he found it while out metal detecting along with a boston terrier carnival cane head. I am sure they were quite common, but i would really like to find one similar to this one, to complete my research.

i would think that as hand crafted it would be hard to find a similar one .

I agree; it doesn't look like a commercial product to me.
Many cultures make ocarinas; to get a complete scale, you need at least 4 holes plus the one you blow into.
This is a ocarina-like whistle, and probably made by an amateur potter, sometime since 1960, I'd think.
