    Hey guys,

We have this little figurine we believe is an antique & an Alaskan depiction of a fisherman. If anyone has any idea on the stone used.. It is a natural stone, very cold to the touch but feels much harder than soapstone. Black stone from Alaska? The figurine measures 6.5" x 6" x 3", and weighs 3.5lbs. Thanks in advance!

Yep. Looks like he might possibly have been holding a bone or ivory spear.

I'd be guessing argilite or coal; the former is a black stone used by West Coast carvers. It's a flint of some kind. Black soapstone would work too, and this is one of those cases where if it's signed the name means more than the rock anyway.

not argillite....it's a shale that the Haida use.....and they carve under the banner of...Northwest Coast...
