Featured Carved bird panel, Chinese?

    Got this at the thrift even with the chip on one petal. Does this have any age? I see some listed as "Chinese panels from the 1930s". Mine feels kind of newer in the hand, zero paint loss, etc. but definitely wood. Red paint on the edges. Were these remade as reproductions or could this actually be older? Thanks.

    Yes, it is Chinese. Peranakan houses have these panels too. They have been making them for centuries, and are still making them. Not as reproductions, just an ongoing tradition.
    Looks like yours has some age, mid-century maybe? Nice quality too.

    HA!! WITHOUT reading, & when I first saw the FIRST image I thought it was brass!!!!!!!!!!!

    Yes, Aqui, almost looks like brass in the photo, lol. Definitely wood though.

    So was this removed from something or was it always meant to be a self standing piece? Why paint the edges red?

    Sometimes panels are replaced when a building is restored, but this one is still in good condition. Unfortunately China has been demolishing many old houses in the name of progress.:arghh:
    The base coat is always red, that is what you see on the ungilded edges.
