I have my great grandmother's Victorian loveseat and matching chair from the 1880s or so. Carved griffin heads, with inlaid wood, ivory and mother-of-pearl. How would I find out who the maker is and what their value is?

@verybrad - What do you think (aside from 'one-off' art furniture museum pieces) are the red hot styles/eras of furniture right now ? I'm talking value-wise naturally.

That's what I thought-everything else seems 'toast' marketability-wise,w/ the exception of the very best of the best-top 1% of 1%.

Interesting. Well, I listed a 1960s cherry coffee table on Facebook Marketplace and got a LOT of interest! Is that mid-century modern? And yes, the Victorian pieces were re-upholstered in 1980. I decided to bring the Victorian pieces home with me. Much cooler than a 1960s coffee table!

The fact that the Victorian pieces are a family heirlooms makes them priceless & a precious part of your ancestry.
All we're talking about here is current marketability.MCM's super hot now & people are mad to slap down their cash for it-many people today live in post-war ranch homes ( built almost millions of 'em ).So they're an easy plug n' play furnishing solution.
Think of every IKEA,Dania,Crate & Barrel, etc you go into-filled w/ MCM inspired stuff.

@bosko69 Why does it seem are you saying that this furniture is MCM?

60s often gets lumped in with MCM. There was certainly a carry-over of the style into the 60s. A lot of modern furniture was produced for the masses during this time frame. Have to remember that the colonial furniture craze was still going strong at the same time. By the 70s, tastes had changed pretty drastically. Colonial was waning but not completely dead. Modern furniture was still produced in Europe and Scandinavia so you do see some of that. Metals, plastics, and smoked glass furniture was big so not much like the MCM furniture. The Mediterranean/Spanish look ruled the day.

This is also when antiques began to take off. People began to appreciate the old and the refinishing craze took off. People were stripping paint applied in the 40s and 50s. The antiqueing kit paint look from the 60s became passe'. Golden oak began to be valued. Prices for the best antique furniture hit new peaks. This was the beginning of a good 35+ year run for the antiques business. Sadly, it all came to an end with the financial crisis in 2008. I can't really pinpoint why tastes changed so drastically then but the business is only now really beginning to recover.
