Carved Stone Bookends

A pair of stone bookends that look and feel like stone, but I am not sure because of the colors. They remond me of King and Bishop chess pieces. With the look of the men and the dragons at the base I was thinking perhaps Norse. These measure 6 3/8" tall, 3 3/8" wide and 1 5/8" deep. Would welcome any information about these.

 

I'm no help on the material, but I did find a lot of chess-piece book ends... apparently it's a 'thing'. Usually choices seem to be knight and rook, king and queen... but there's a variety.

Those are fabulous. Not what I expected to see at all. They look like glass,but obviously arent.

What is weird is that the marbling does not extend into the rock.
Almost like it is painted/enameled on.



I think soapstone with some sort of coating to make it look like marble.
