Featured Carved wood Chakwaina Kachina doll help.

    I saw this at my favorite thrift today and couldn't pass it up for $9.00. He is 15 1/2" tall and signed on the bottom.
    Hoping to find out more about this sculpture as i would call it.
    And the artist. Also the break on the symbol on the back of his head i am not sure if it was a large piece broke off?

    Could be Cottonwood. But it it Hopi not Navajo.

    Likely missing a wooden feather decoration, that would have hung down from the attached red and blue disc on the back of its head.

    I like it and would have bought it too, but it isn't a Kachina doll. It is more like an artist's rendition.

    I believe it's oftentimes cottonwood root, as I think the roots have certain important symbolic characteristics.

    Here's an unusual one I have, that's maybe unfinished, and that definitely shows a root structure shape.
