Featured Carved wood figure

    Hi folks

    I got this at a boot sale yesterday, it was only peanuts, so doesn't matter if it's modern tourist junk !

    I thought the carving was ok though, and uniform interesting

    Can't find any of the like, so any thoughts/help appreciated

    1st impression only: the overall image strikes me as an African regimental soldier (drummer, duh) donning Western (Prussian or English come to mind) military gear from turn of 20th C. The boots look very WWI. I'd search in the South Africa, maybe German West Africa occupation for clues.

    King's African Rifles, drummer, British Colonial regiment in East Africa during World War I.

    My guess, not modern. Comparable (1917) at this site:

    So you have evidence of at least one 'contemporary' example of what I would call 'trench art'. Just a guess.

    The detail is wonderful......not what one would expect on a rushed tourist item....

    yep, same thing that makes you want to 'take it home' from a boot sale. those are the good ones imo.
