Carved Wood Indian Head Bookends - Help Please!

So I picked these up yesterday and while the stained wood did give me pause, I figured it worth trying based on what the thrift store was charging. I know little about the originals except seeing one listing for a single bookend that is apparently vintage 1920's. My question is, were these reproduced? Would the originals be stained wood to get the correct Native American skin color or were they just a solid dark wood? These were definitely hand carved and have some age based on minor dings/divets in the wood.

These measure 8 1/4" tall, 7" wide and 5 1/4" deep and appear to me made in 3 parts... the head, the bottom and the side. Finishing nails appear to have been used to mount the head. Thanks for any insight!
