Featured Carved wood owl pipe rest? Inkwell?

I’ve had this quite a while and have searched hours over the years for a similar item without success. I thought it was a pipe stand but noticed the Cross signature and now I’m not sure. Any thoughts/help much appreciated. I’d also like to know what the wood is. The eyes are glass.

 

That's the logo of Mark Cross, America's premier leather goods company. That would make it a luxury item, whatever it is.

Here's a Mark Cross leather desk set with an owl paperweight. Don't think that's what yours is but does tell us company has used a similar figure before.

You're amazing. I've found a carved ebony owl brush holder that looks similar in an old (1922) advertisement. Getting closer.
