Carved wooden Koi tray

Even an idea of the type of wood will be helpful. It's approx 21 inches long and 14 inches across at its widest point. There are a couple of carved Koi on one end so there is an Oriental influence, but it could be someone's garage woodworking project. The bottom is flat with three rubber feet, but the interiors of the top sections are all rather rounded so it's not really suitable for setting items on - which tends to rule out a tea tray. A small chip in the lacquer on one edges shows the raw wood underneath.

looks like a burl of some sort ........hard to tell the wood with that treatment on it...

Thanks. I believed I'd already replied but, unless my reply is pending somewhere, it doesn't appear to have gone through. I agree about the burl wood. That, or root wood, was one of my first thoughts. A member on my Facebook antiques group also mentioned that - specifically cypress root wood (and another member also suggested cypress). As far as age, my first thought (again) was late 20th century - possibly the 1970s. There is some wear on it but not a lot. I've attached a photo of the backside, which gives a better idea of the grain.

 

Arts and crafts fairs often feature artists who make beautiful items out of wood. This reminds me of those.
