The part with the vertical slats looks like a boot scraper to me. Not a clue about the open part, although that part does appear to be missing something that was held in place by those screws on the underside.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

Looks good, Abuela and Anund! Kard... this IS big enough to be a boot-scraper, right?

And I'll bet you a dollar (not really) that it has the "rooster" on it because it was positioned just outside the back door leading into the kitchen (get the mud/chicken mess off your shoes from gathering the eggs before venturing into the kitchen to cook them for breakfast). Most rural/farm ladies had "outdoors only" short rubber boots to go into the hen house to collect the morning's eggs.;)

About 11" x 8", so could be a boot scrapper. I guess not that old as there are Phillips screws.

    Hi,
I think it is older, the person tried to remove the rooster and since the base was so rusty the original screws broke off. The rooster was then painted and replaced with Phillip screws. They were unable to find a new brush. JMHO

Cute piece. Definitely a shoe-scraper. And yes, most likely missing the hard brush on the other side. I wonder if that's easily replaced? Get a chunk of old doormat? Nail it to a board and mount it on?

Here I was thinking it was a toast rack that maybe had a missing butter dish.

A brush could be fit to that space quite easily. :)

And what's really funny is that I have chickens and I've had boot scrapers (wore them out)! My boot scrapers were way plain by comparison to this one though.:D

Mill Cove, I've never even noticed them in Boston and wouldn't have know what they were for if I had. Learn something new everyday... especially in Antiquers!

Pat, some places still have the iron poles with the rings to tie up the horses.

It's wonderful that people didn't rip them out.

I agree, Mill Cove, it is wonderful that these relics of the past are still in place. Rings for tying horses I would probably recognize, but not the boot scrappers. My husband might, though, since his grandparents had a farm and I bet they had some sort of scrapper.
