I have a cast? relief wall plaque depicting the Goddess Athena and 5 other figures and a dog. I presume it's cast iron and measures 33cm in diameter and approx. 3.5cm in "depth". As a complete novice can anyone please enlighten me as to it's origins and whether it's priceless or worthless!?.
I suspect it may have been the property of a great, great Aunt who was German.
There is a small amount of repaired damage to the rim, impossible to see on photos.
    Many thanks

Tried to upload pictures but failed as "file too large" any advice?

Not to worry, Paul. Someone will be along shortly with instruction as to how to upload photographs. (Happens to all new members.)

You don't need to presume - test it with a simple magnet.

You can also try what others have suggested, and that is to email your images to yourself as MEDIUM, and they should come back UNDER the 1 MB maximum!! Personally, I've never tried that, but many say it works!!

Tested with magnet, it is very magnetic.
There is some wear to the 4 "raised ovals" revealing a brown/bronze colour, is this normal for cast iron?

@Bronwen is very knowledgable on mythology, I bet she can tell us the story this picture represents.

    Having trouble with pics.
Back is simply reverse relief, can't find any marks, dates or initials. Has original hanger.
Dog seems oblivious to whatever is going on!

If it's a crisp reverse relief, that would indicate that the piece was stamped, in which case it wouldn't be cast iron.

I'm confused, Debora. Are you saying the scene and characters in the painting is the same as the scene on the plaque? Or just different representations of the same story?

It's not a crisp relief, sure it's cast.
Thanks for the replies, is it worthless or priceless? It's going to charity.

You might want to wait until you know for certain what you have. Could/would you post a photograph of the back? That would be helpful. Also... Have you examined it carefully for a foundry mark?
