Any info on this chair would be appreciated. Would it have been painted originally? Of so what color?
    Thank You!

I love it. It doesn't look like it was ever painted, but maybe the others think differently.

I would think that it is as is.

It looks Dutch to me, arts & crafts style maybe? I have seen similar arms on early dutch/american chairs
Agrees with AJ, doubt this was ever painted

Well, I don't think it's American so kinda out of my field but, I'll guess late 19th early 20th century.
I could be wrong on that, wait for others to post.
Where are you, where did you get chair?

I’m in California. The chair was in a home I’m involved in clearing out, no history or context specifically.

Yeah, that means it could be from anywhere in world, still, i doubt american.
    It's a very cool chair.
@verybrad knows alot about this period, hopefully he will stop by later & post.

    Right on.
The majority of furniture in the house is from around that period so...

The seat and the back are a different pattern/material. Do you think it was repaired at some point?

I don't know, the weaving is unusual though, that's for sure.

Looks like a ca. 1900 craftsy/aesthetic walnut chair, unusual but not impossible for the U.S. One or both of the seat and back have been replaced. And as said above, this has never been painted and I hope it never will be :)

My hope as well. Even if it had been painted originally I’m one to accept and appreciate the “story” and history of stuff. There are times when people do things to items that are just so wrong and hideous that reversing such otriousities can make sense.
My expertise is in musical instruments, not furniture. There are certain “modifications” or alterations that can actual help support an items provenance and may not effect value negatively. That being said I’ve seen some awful things.

Late 19th century and more aesthetic period than arts and crafts. Could very well be American but European just as likely. Never painted.
